POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for proving basic life support medical
care and transportation to patients traveling for various medically based
appointments and treatment. Responsible for the care and transport of
Marchman and Baker act patients to appropriate receiving facilities. Response for the care and transport of
Non-Medical Stretcher transports.
Most trips originate and end within Brevard County however; trips
are routinely scheduled outside the Brevard County area such as Orlando,
Gainesville, Tampa, Jacksonville and Miami.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
Ø
Provide appropriate basic life support care to patients during
transport.
Ø
Provide basic and assist in advanced life
support to patients during transport in accordance with all policy,
procedures, protocols, ordinances and statues and in a safe, competent and
caring fashion.
Ø
Safe operation of Coastal Health Systems vehicles to transport
patients to and from health care facilities, doctor’s offices, mental
health, detox and other medically based appointments.
Ø
Transfer or assist patients onto the stretcher ensuring the
patient is properly secured and the stretcher is in a locked and in a
stable position prior to transport.
Ø
Load and secure all stretcher transports into the vehicle using
proper procedures and technique.
Ø
Complete all required paperwork in a timely and efficient manner.
Ø
Perform vehicle and equipment inspections on a daily basis.
Ø
Clean and Fuel the vehicles on a daily basis or as instructed by
supervision.
Ø
Proper use of two-way radio and paging equipment.
Ø
Provide patient lift assist as directed by Dispatch or Supervision.
Ø
Abide by all Coastal policies, procedures and safety programs.
OTHER DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
Ø
Transport NMS patients as directed.
Ø
Coordinate rescue and mutual aid activities with law enforcement,
paramedics and fire fighters
Ø
Attend training classes, seminars and meetings as directed.
Ø
May elect with supervisor approval to train to perform other
transport duties.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education or Formal
Training:
Ø
High School diploma or equivalency
Ø
Current certification as a Florida EMT
Ø
Current EVOC certification
Ø
Valid Florida Commercial Driver’s license Class D license with an
E endorsement
Ø
Possess and maintain clean and valid Florida Driver’s license.
Ø
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support ‘C”
certification
Knowledge, Skill and
Ability:
Ø
Be physically and mentally able to operate an ambulance type
vehicle.
Ø
Be physically and mentally able to perform BLS functions.
Ø
Good working knowledge of Brevard County and strong map reading
skills.
Ø
Able to work well independently and as part of a team.
Ø
Able to clearly communicate on a two-way radio system.
Ø
Must successfully complete a criminal, personal and driving
background check.
Ø
Must be able to successful complete with a score higher than 80%
a medical practical and written exam.
Ø
Must possess good customer service skills.
Experience:
Ø
One year ambulance driving experience preferred.
Ø
Six months EMT experience preferred
Physical Requirements:
Ø
Sufficient vision and hearing to meet motor vehicle licensing
requirements.
Ø
Able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds without assistance.
Ø
Able to lift up to 400 pounds with assistance.
Ø
Able to stand, sit, lift, stoop, bend, carry, grip, sit and walk
for extended periods of time.
Ø
Good hand and finger dexterity.
Ø
Able to do tasks requiring good eye and hand coordination.
Ø
Able to hear communication over two-way radio and telephone.
Ø
Able to speak clearly in English over a two-way radio or
telephone.
Ø
Able to understand, write and record documentation in English.
Material and
equipment:

Ambulance type vehicles
Ø
Two-way radio and pagers

Various Medical equipment and protocols
Ø
Personal and protective safety equipment
Ø
Disinfectant cleaning agents
Work Environment:
Ø
Outside and inside air-conditioned vehicles.
Ø
Work is performed in various locations such as private homes,
hospital, nursing homes, Dr office scenes of an accident, etc.
Ø
May be exposed to adverse weather conditions while assisting
clients to and from vehicles.
Ø
Required to work as part of a two-member team to push, pull, lift
and move patients onto stretchers and load stretcher into the vehicles.
Stretcher transport can normally range from 150 to 500 pounds.
Interrelationships:
Ø
Constant interaction with patients and their family, healthcare
agency staff, other EMS agencies/ staff, co-workers, dispatch office,
Billing office staff medical offices, and, law enforcement
Ø
Position requires
exceptional tact, diplomacy and professionalism.
